Hello and welcome to September! Even though the temps are HOT, it’s time to get serious about your fall garden. Whether you garden in containers, raised beds, or directly in the ground, preparing the soil is critical in the success of your plantings. Add organic matter to your soil before planting. I use compost from my compost bins to prepare some of my garden beds and add composted manure to other areas. The areas where I add manure, I allow to sit for a week or two before planting. This is a great first step for your fall garden.

Hi Diane, I have been gardening for many years in the desert and the past 9 years have some nice raised vegetable beds. I never have enough good compost to refresh with in the fall and my plants don’t get thrive. Where and what would you recommend.

Good Morning Julie, Thank you so much for your question. It sound like you are asking me about compost. Have you considered turning in manure before you plant? Then use what compost you make as a top coat/mulch. Singh Farms is a local farm that sells compost. They are located near the 101 and Thomas. I know they have a facebook page but I have not found an official web site. You need to fertilize to make sure your plants are getting all the nutrients needed to flower and produce. A little fertilizer goes a long way.
