Before

It is true; grass can be a beneficial addition to your property in the desert southwest.  Not only does it look inviting, it can also help reduce the heat island effect.  The Bermuda grass in my own front yard was something I lived with once I became educated on its benefits.  The water usage for Bermuda grass is relatively low when compared with the benefits.  What I cannot accept is the water waste from runoff into streets and parking lots.

After

Living on a small lot limited my edible garden capacity.  My backyard vegetable garden is yielding incredible food but just does not have enough space.  I have been reading about homes that are turning their front yards into attractive edible landscapes and this sounded like a wonderful solution to my need for more gardening space!  After much consideration, I converted my front yard into areas where I can expand my food production as well as areas for low water use shrubs and plantings.
